The government today said that those found guilty of corruption in Commonwealth Games projects will not be spared at any cost. Intervening in the debate on the situation arising out of the delay in the completion of projects of the mega event, the Urban Development Minister Mr. Jaipal Reddy said that most of the stadia including the Commonwealth Games village have been completed and the rest will also be ready by the end of this month. He assured the House that the Games to be hosted by India will be one of the best since their inception. He said that instead of playing politics over the issue, everyone should cooperate to make the games a success.Earlier, the BJP led opposition demanded a probe either by a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) or CBI into the alleged corruption in Commonwealth Games related projects. Initiating a discussion on the issue, Mr Kirti Azad held the government responsible for delay and corruption in the projects. He said there has been lack of proper coordination between various agencies responsible for preparations of the games. Quoting extensively from the report of the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC), Mr. Azad alleged that ineligible agencies were awarded tenders and companies having no expertise have been included in the list. He said for the renovation of the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, a whopping 961 crore rupees have been spent.Putting up a strong defence, Mr. Manish Tiwari of the Congress accused the opposition of taking political mileage of the situation at the cost of the prestige of the nation. Rebutting one-by-one charges of the opposition including in the preparations for the games, Mr. Tiwari said that 18 out of 20 stadia have already been completed, one will be formally handed over on the 15th of this month and the keys for the Games Village will be given on the 16th of next month. Rejecting the accusations that players have been neglected, Mr. Tiwari said 678 crore rupees have spent on their training. He also said the reports of the Chief Technical Examiners Office (CTE) are not final reports of the Central Vigilance Commission. He said the Delhi Government has spent more than 15 hundred crore rupees for the development of infrastructure like flyovers, Metro and buying a fleet of buses. The discussion is continuing.
