In Bihar, the third phase of Panchayat elections at 875 Gram Panchayats in 54 blocks is progressing peacefully amidst tight security. Polling will continue till 5 in the evening. However, in the Naxal affected areas, polling will end at 3 pm. AIR Patna correspondent reports that no incidents of violence have been reported so far from any part of the state. Moderate turnout of voters is reported due to the intense heat. One presiding officer has been arrested in Saran District on charges of irregularities in the conduct of elections. Another patrolling magistrate was arrested in drunken condition in Begusarai district. In Madhubani, anti-social elements snatched two rifles from the security men. Over three hundred persons have been arrested as precautionary measures. About eighteen thousand rupees were seized from the possession of arrested persons. Over 52 lakh electorates will decide the fortune of 87 thousand 92 candidates. The Panchayat elections will conclude on May 18 after the remaining seven more phases. The fourth phase of elections will be held on the 30th of this month.
