The government today said that it is trying to develop a consensus among all parties to table the Bill on Sugarcane pricing next week in Parliament. Talking to reporters after an all party meeting, Agriculture Minister Mr. Sharad Pawar said that more meetings will be conducted before reaching a conclusion. Sources said that differences came up in the meeting as some members demanded including section 5(a), which provides for profit sharing between farmers and mill owners, in the proposed bill while members from the southern states opposed this demand. Clarifying government’s stand on the issue, the Agriculture Minister said that all benefits for farmers are included in the provisions of the FRP and including 5(a) will result with the financial pressure on government again.

Meanwhile, RLD leader Ajit Singh said that an agreement has been reached between farmers and mill owners regarding the sugarcane prices in Uttar Pradesh.
