The Dalai Lama begins Arunachal Pradesh visit

Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama today hit out at China for opposing his visit to Arunachal Pradesh and expressed surprise over Chinese claims to Tawang. The spiritual leader, who arrived in Tawang today on a four-day visit, said it is usual for the Chinese to protest wherever he goes and termed his trip as non- political.Recalling the 1962 Sino-India war , the Dalai Lama told reporters that the People's Liberation Army of China had occupied Tawang and nearly reached Bomdila that year. He pointed out that the then Chinese Government declared a unilateral ceasefire and withdrew its forces. In an apparent reference to Chinese claims over Tawang, the Dalai Lama said now the Chinese have got different views. On Chinese opposition to his visit, the Dalai Lama said, the Chinese Communists turn quite sad usually on his every movement. He said the main aim of the visit was promotion of human values. The Dalai Lama said the Buddhist religion and culture were passing through a difficult period.Earlier, the Dalai Lama, who flew in from Guwahati by helicopter, was received by Arunachal Chief Minister Dorjee Khandu and his cabinet colleagues. The Dalai Lama, who will be staying in the 300-year-old Tawang Monastery, will hold religious discourses for the Buddhist community. The visit coincides with 50 years of his arrival in Tawang in 1959 after a failed uprising in Tibet against China.
