Tharoor's remarks: BJP decides to observe Aakrosh Diwas on March 25

BJP has escalated its attack on Congress for Shashi Tharoor comparing JNU students' union president Kanhaiya Kumar with freedom fighter Bhagat Singh. Reiterating its demand for apology form Mr. Tharoor and his party, the BJP has decided to observe Aakrosh Diwas on 25th of this month against the remarks.

Talking to reporters in New Delhi today, senior BJP leader Prakash Javadekar said the remarks are an insult to the martyrs. He wondered how any one can make comparison between them as Bhagat Singh had fought against British rule while Kanhaiya Kumar is an accused in a sedition case for raising anti-national slogans. He also alleged it is not for the first time that Congress had shown disrespect to martyrs and during UPA rule in an open learning book Bhagat Singh was described as terrorist.

In 2007 civil services examination question paper, the students were asked to write on revolutionary terrorism of Bhagat Singh.

Two days back, addressing a group of students at the JNU, Tharoor, while listing the names of victims of sedition law under British rule, had said Bhagat Singh was Kanhaiya Kumar of his time.

However, Mr. Tharoor has already clarified that he did not intend to equate Kanhaiya with Bhagat Singh. He said all what he meant was that the two men had certain qualities in common. He said Bhagat Singh was a Kanhaiya of his time as a young man in his 20s with Marxist ideas and beliefs, who had a great passion for the motherland. The Congress had also distanced itself from the remarks.
