Thane building collaps: Death toll goes up to 72

Nearly 42 hours after the fateful seven-storey illegal structure, located in Shil Phata area that collapsed on Thursday, the rescue operation has concluded. The death toll in the incident has risen to 72 including children and women. 54 people are injured in the incident. 36 of them have been admitted to various hospitals in Mumbai. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), was pressed into service to assist the local police and civic administration.

The building was constructed in the forest area and was facing notice from the Thane Municipal Corporation. The Daighar police in Thane registered a case against builders under Section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of IPC.

Chief Minister of Maharashtra Prithviraj Chavan visited the site yesterday and took stock of the situation. He told reporters that the collapsed structure was illegal and announced the incident would be thoroughly probed by the additional chief secretary. He also announced suspension of deputy commissioner of Thane Municipal Corporation (encroachment department) Deepak Chavan and senior police inspector of the area. He said that they are deliberating on formation of a special team for prevention of illegal constructions.
