Thailand blanks India in Fed Cup opener

India's campaign in the Fed Cup tennis tournament was off to a disastrous start with the team going down 0-3 in the opening match of the Asia/Oceania Zone Group I tie against hosts Thailand today. In the first singles match of pool A, 399th-ranked Prerna Bhambri lost 2-6 5-7 to world No.629 Bunyawi Thamchaiwat.In the secomd match, Ankita Rana, ranked 307, fought hard but went down 6-7, 3-6 to world No.149 Luksika Kumkhum. The downward slump continued in the doubles match with Prerna and Prarthana G. Thombare 7-6 , 2-6, 4-6 to Thailand's Kamonwan Buayam and Peangtarn Plipuech.In today's another Group A contest, India lost 1-2 to Japan. Ankita Raina recorded the biggest win of her career by beating world number 56 Nao Hibino. But Sania Mirza suffered a rare defeat in doubles as she and Prarthana Thombare lost 5-7 3-6 to the pairing of Shuko Aoyama and Hozumi. Prarthana, also lost to Eri Hozumi 2-6, 1-6 in Singles.
