Thai PM accused of violating human rights

Thailand's Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has been accused of violating human rights by the Opposition. The Thai opposition has said the prime minister violated the rights of anti-government Red Shirt protesters when he ordered the military to disperse them from their protest site. The accusation was made during a heated parliamentary no-confidence debate. The opposition said the army's approach was not in line with international standards. In his reply, the prime minister said the army was defending itself against armed militants and the government only planned to surround the rally site to block access to supplies to the protesters. Meanwhile, lawyers for Red Shirt figurehead, former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, have hired an international war crimes expert to investigate the allegations. Violence associated with the two-month long rally and its dispersal killed 88 people in the Thai capital.
