Thailand's Prime Minister AbhisitVejjajiva today described the situation in his country as back tonormal. The curfew imposed in the wake of deadly anti-government protests has now been lifted. The premier, howoever, said emergency rule is still necessary after two months of massrallies by Red Shirt demonstrators that paralysed thecapital and left almost 90 people dead.Abhisit said in his weekly television address the authorities willkeep an eye on the situation and then consider lifting the state ofemergency. In a separate address to foreign diplomats,Abhisit said Thailand needed to rebuild the social andeconomic compact between people and the government butjustified the crackdown. The premier also said there is a commitment toaddressing the situation through the democratic process in thecountry, which has seen 18 actual or attempted coups since1932.
