Thailand's Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva today described the situation in his country as back to normal. The curfew imposed in the wake of deadly anti-government protests has now been lifted.<br/><br/>The premier, howoever, said emergency rule is still necessary after two months of mass<br/>rallies by Red Shirt demonstrators that paralysed the capital and left almost 90 people dead.<br/><br/>Abhisit said in his weekly television address the authorities will keep an eye on the situation and then consider lifting the state of emergency. <br/><br/>In a separate address to foreign diplomats, Abhisit said Thailand needed to rebuild the social and economic compact between people and the government but justified the crackdown.<br/><br/>The premier also said there is a commitment to addressing the situation through the democratic process in the country, which has seen 18 actual or attempted coups since<br/>1932.
