Thai court hearing crucial final arguments

A court in Thailand is hearing final arguments in a case that could see the ruling Democrat Party dissolved and the Prime Minister banned from politics. Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has said he will step down immediately if the Constitutional Court rules against him. Experts say a decision could be announced this afternoon. Thailand’s Election Commission has already recommended that the party be abolished over accusations that it misspent public funds during an election campaign in 2005. Mr. Abhisit was the party’s deputy leader at the time. Thailand’s last two prime ministers, both allied with former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, were forced out from office by court rulings.
