<br/>India's first monorail was test-driven in Mumbai on the occasion of Republic Day on Tuesday. Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan was present at the test run of the monorail, which will eventually run between Jacob Circle and Chembur.<br/><br/>A consortium of Larsen & Toubro and SCOMI Engineering of Malaysia, is building the 19.54-km line.<br/><br/>The trial, however, took place on a 108-metre stretch between Wadala and Bhakti Park Complex as the electrification required for the trial was complete only upto that point.<br/><br/>Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority, MMRDA officials hope that the Jacob Circle-Chembur route will be complete by May 2011. The Monorail will be a substitute of local trains and other road transportation in Mumbai.<br/><br/>According to the sources, initially, 14 Monorails with four coaches each will be available to take commuters to their destinations in no time. The capacity of monorail will be 500 passengers.
