Terrorism tops agenda of Krishna’s talks with Qureshi

Dealing with the terrorism is high on the agenda of talks between External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna and his Pakistani counterpart Shah Mehmood Qureshi that began in Islamabad this morning. Mr. Krishna on his arrival yesterday pledged to begin a new journey in improving relations with Pakistan but made it clear that Islamabad needed to act on confessions by David Coleman Headley on the Mumbai attacks.

Bridging the trust deficit will also hog the lime light in the talks. New Delhi while emphasizing on Headley's reported admission to both the Indian and American interrogators has asserted that Pakistan should act on the overwhelming and irrefutable nature of evidence on the involvement of Pakistani actors including David Headley in the ghastly attacks. The external affairs minister said the frequent anti-India statements of Lashkar founder Hafiz Saeed, the mastermind of the Mumbai attack, provoke the people of Pakistan against India and such tirade against India will not help smoothen bilateral relationship. He noted that his three-day visit marks the beginning of a new journey in New Delhi’s efforts to build a peaceful, friendly and cooperative relationship between the two countries.

The External affairs minister will call on the president and the Prime Minister of Pakistan later in the evening. Before leaving back home tomorrow, he will meet PML[N] Leadership and Awami National Party leadership and exchange views on issues of mutual interest. Our correspondent covering the visit reports from Islamabad that Pakistani media has given prominence to the talks and strict security arrangements have been made around the venue of the talks.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Information and Broadcasting Minister Qamar Zaman Kaira appealed media from both the countries to act in a balanced manner to built trust and confidence so that all outstanding issues can be addressed. Talking to Indian journalists, he said, media has to play an important role in preparing the public opinion for taking important decisions to establish lasting peace in the subcontinent.
