Terrorism poses threat to civilised world & needs to be defeated: PM

The Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh today said that terrorism poses a threat to the civilized world and said that it must be defeated. Delivering address to the Council on Foreign Relations in Washington today, Dr. Singh said that a selective approach against terrorism will not work. He said that we should not harbour any illusions that a selective approach to terrorism, tackling it in one place while ignoring it in others, will work. Referring to Jammu and Kashmir, the Prime Minister reiterated that India is ready to hold talks with Pakistan for finding solution to all bilateral issues including Jammu and Kashmir but for that to happen Pakistan will have to come to table with good faith and sincerity.

Asking Pakistan to abjure terrorism, the Prime Minister said that India and Pakistan can work together for seeking a South Asia of peace, friendship and prosperity, where its borders will be energized by the flow of people, goods and ideas. The Prime Minister said Indian Government took number of initiatives over the past few years in normalizing relations with Pakistan but regretted that Mumbai attacks derailed the dialogue process with Pakistan.

The Prime Minister said that the terrorist infrastructure is still intact in Pakistan and no action has been taken against the people responsible for last year’s Mumbai attacks. Calling for strict action against the perpetrators of Mumbai carnage, Dr. Singh urged the international community to exert pressure on Pakistan to bring the terrorists to justice.

He said there was now impeccable evidence that the conspiracy to carry out Mumbai attacks was planned in Pakistan and executed in connivance with some people in Pakistan.
