Tension prevails in Arunachal Pradesh over resident certificate

In Arunachal Pradesh, Namsai sub-division in Lohit district remains tensed for the third day on Monday. The tension developed following clashes between locals of Namsai and non-APST people who were staging a demonstration on Saturday against the recent government decision to revoke issuing permanent resident certificate to non-Arunachalees.Chief Minister Dorjee Khandu on Monday airdashed to Namsai to take stock of the situation.Meanwhile, the district magistrate of Lohit has clamped shoot at sight orders after agitating non locals set ablaze a few houses belonging to local tribals at New Mohong and Old Mohong village in the district last night. The district administration on Monday said the situation is now under control but tense.AIR Correspondent reports, the PRC issue has been around for quite time now. Around 70 people were injured on Saturday when clashes broke out between locals of Namsai and non-APST people who were staging a demonstration against the recent government decision to revoke issuing permanent resident certificate to non-Arunachalees.Before this, the government had decided to grant the status to non-Arunachalees who had been residing in the two districts of Lohit and Changlang prior to 1968 for educational purposes.Thousands of protesters staged a demonstration in Namsai on Saturday during which the clashes broke out. The district administration has also enforced Section 144 CrPC in the sub-division. Reports from the district said several round of talks are going on now.
