Tension heightens in West Bank and Gaza

Tension has risen in Palestinian areas of West Bank and Gaza on the first anniversary of the Gaza war which falls today. Killing of six Palestinians by Israeli soldiers in two separate operations has added to tension. Palestinian leaders have condemned the killings. Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad denounced the operation as a deliberate attempt to undermine recent security gains. The rival Palestinian group Hamas, which runs the Gaza Strip has said that Abbas government was partly to blame for the killings because of its cooperation with Israel. Israel has claimed that the three men killed in West Bank were behind a recent death of an Israeli settler while another three killed in Gaza were trying to infiltrate from the Gaza Strip in to Israel near the Erez crossing. According to Fatah those killed in West bank were unarmed and a security source for Hamas claimed that the three killed on Gaza crossing were shot as they collected scrap metal.<br/>
