In Andhra Pradesh tension prevailed in Vizianagaram town and other parts of the district for the third day on Sunday, as anti-bifurcation agitators hit the streets despite a curfew and pelted police with stones, report agencies.
Curfew was clamped last night in the coastal town Vizianagaram in the wake of large-scale violence after protesters indulged in arson, looting shops and damaging public and private properties.
Police said some protesters were taken into custody.Inspector General of Police, North Coastal Zone, Dwaraka Tirumala Rao said the overall situation in Seemandhra was under control. He said additional forces are being deployed.Meanwhile, power employees in Seemandhra began an indefinite strike today to protest the decision to divide Andhra Pradesh.
Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy appealed to the agitating employees to resume their duties as power generation at several power stations in the Coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema regions and supply was impacted resulting in unscheduled power cuts in the two regions and also in Hyderabad.
The South Central Railway has cancelled several passenger trains running on Kazipet-Vijayawada, Vijayawada-Gudur-Tirupati sections on Sunday with a view to handle any situation arising out of possible break in power supply to Railways.Many parts in Rayalaseema and coastal Andhra have been roiling since the Union Cabinet's October 3 decision to carve out Telangana state out of Andhra Pradesh.
