The Supreme Court today stayed Madras High Court order cancelling bail of former Telecom Minister Dayanidhi Maran in telephone exchange scam case.

A three-judge bench of the Court issued notice to CBI seeking its response in two weeks on Maran's plea against his arrest. The apex court questioned CBI's decision to arrest Maran saying he and and the BSNL officials can be questioned without being arrested. The matter will come up for hearing on 14th of next month.

The Madras High Court had on Monday cancelled Maran's interim anticipatory bail and directed him to surrender before the CBI within three days while rejecting his charges of political vendetta. CBI has registered an FIR against Maran and others alleging that more than 300 high-speed telephone lines were provided at his residence in Chennai and extended to his brother Kalanithi Maran's SUN TV channel to enable its uplinking when Dayanidhi Maran was Telecom Minister from 2004-07.
