The ongoing general strike call demanding statehood for Telangana region in Andhra Pradesh has affected the industrial production in the State. The dip in power generation is more evident especially in Coastal Andhra Pradesh and particularly in Visakhapatnam. Projecting an increased shortage of 31 million units (mu) per day as on the 27th of this month, the AP Transco and the power distribution companies are implementing power cut during evenings for industries in addition to the power holiday for once in a week. For a State that is dependent on thermal and hydel power projects, the general strike call in the Telangana region for more than a fortnight from now has its ill effects on the State’s power generation as coal reserves are on a decline. As power production in the state has dipped considerably due to prolonged agitation in Telangana region the State is facing extreme power shortage that has forced the government to cut one out of seven hours of power supply for the farming community. Transco officials explained that this was offset by a steep hike in the overall demand to 268 million units as on Tuesday last, due to the continuing dry spell as against the supply of 237 million units. Further, generation at Srisailam and Nagarjunasagar was reduced to 26 million units in order to conserve water for the coming months. The management put its total revenue loss due to the strike so far at Rs 300 crore. Power supply to the domestic use is already hit by four to six hours a day, the Southern Power Distribution Company has recently announced the industry to strictly adhere to one-day power holiday in a week, besides no use of power for industrial production between 6:30 to 10:30 in the evening every day other than for lighting supply till further notice. Now this has become a cause to worry for all the continuous process industries as well as the software units in Andhra region and particularly in Visakhapatnam district as huge investments made would either deliver a diminished productivity incurring loss of interest on the borrowed loans or they would have to forego the time-bound project work orders from abroad obtained under stiff competition with respect to the IT Sector. AIR correspondent reports, the statement given by State Congress affairs-in-charge Gulam Nabi Azad that he would give his report on Telangana to the party high command in two days has evoked discussion among the political parties. The Congress Telangana steering committee leaders have camped in Delhi.Meanwhile, the TDP MLA from Nizamabad district of Telangana region G. Gowardhan resigned from the party. The party MLAs from the region had tendered their resignations from the Assembly on Wednesday evening.
