Mobile users will pay less for roaming from today onwards as leading operators, Airtel, Vodafone, Idea and Reliance Communication, slashed their roaming call rates by up to 40 per cent and SMS rates by upto 75 percent. This rate revision comes weeks after Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, Trai, had cut maximum or ceiling rate for national roaming calls and SMSes. Now according to new ceiling rate, telecom companies can only charge maximum of Rs 1.15 per minute for STD calls on roaming. Earlier, telecom companies were charging Rs 1.50 per minute on roaming. Similarly, an operator can charge a maximum of 80 paise per minute for a local call instead of Re 1. TRAI has also reduced National SMS ceiling rate from Rs 1.50 to 38 paise. Now a subscriber can be charged a maximum of 25 paise instead of One rupee local SMS.Country's largest mobile operator Bharti Airtel said its incoming call rates is reduced by up to 40 per cent and the outgoing local call rates are reduced by up to 20 per cent whereas the outgoing inter circle call rates will see a decline of up to 23 per cent. Airtel has reduced the outgoing local SMS rate by up to 75 per cent.Second largest operator Vodafone said for receiving calls customers will now have to pay 45 paise per minute instead of earlier 75 paise per minute a cut of 40 per cent. Vodafone said that outgoing local calls will be charged 80 paise now instead of Re 1 and STD calls will be charged at Rs 1.15 per minute as compared to Rs 1.50 per minute, earlier. For a local SMS while on roaming, users will pay 25 paise as compared to Re 1; and for STD SMS, 38 paise will be charged instead of Rs 1.50, earlier. Similarly, Idea Cellular and Reliance Communications reduced roaming call rates by 40 per cent.
