Telecom Minister launches National Internet Registry to ease IP address allocation

Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal has expressed hope that free roaming will start before October this year. Talking to reporters on the sidelines of a function in New Delhi this morning, Mr Sibal said that Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, TRAI, has issued consultation paper in this regard.
Earlier, Mr Sibal launched the portal of National Internet Registry, NIR.
National Internet Registry will ease the allocation of Internet Protocol, IP, addresses within the country. It has been named as Indian Registry for Internet Names and Numbers. The portal is available at www.irinn.in. NIR is an entity which coordinates the allocation of IP address with other internet resources management function at a national level in the country. It functions under the over all umbrella of Regional Internet Registry which is Asia Pacific Network Information Centre.
After the launch of the portal, Mr Sibal said, setting up of NIR will not only reduce cost in procuring IP address but will also facilitate faster access to information for cyber crime investigators and government authorities. He said creation of the portal will encourage and promote activities related to research, education and training.
