The government has said there is no specific cyber security threat arising out of spyware and malwares due to telecom equipment being imported from any specific country. Stating this in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha today, the Minister of State for Communications and IT Milind Deora said a framework exists to deal with potential threats posed by the induction of Chinese Telecom equipments or sourced from any other country.The Government is aware about a US government intelligence report on issues posed by Chinese Telecom companies Huawei & ZTE, the Minister said. Telecom equipment and networks are prone to spywares, irrespective of the sources like telecom gear manufactured in China or supplied by some other vendors, that may have its origins in the equipment itself or embedded software or inserted by anti-social and anti-national elements, he added.In a separate reply, Mr. Deora admitted there has been a rise in attempts of hacking against various government ministries and departments. As many as 294 government websites were hacked this year till October. During May-June Distributed Denial of Service attacks were launched against number of government websites by various hacker groups. The Central government, State governments and other critical organisations are implementing a Crisis Management Plan for countering cyber attacks and cyber terrorism. A sum of over 45 crore rupees has been earmarked for cyber security during the current budget.
