Tejinder Singh: Adarsh building not security threat to defence installations

Retired lieutenant general Tejinder Singh today told the two-member inquiry commission that the scam-tainted Adarsh building in south Mumbai was not a security threat to defence installations in the vicinity. Singh had applied for membership in Adarsh society in November 2006 when he was the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of Maharashtra, Goa and Gujarat area. Singh told the judicial panel that before applying for membership he had ascertained himself whether all permissions and clearances were given to the society by the government.

On July 19, former Army chief Deepak Kapoor had also told the commission that he did not think Adarsh society was a security threat for the nearby defence installation as compared to other high-rise buildings in the area. Kapoor, who retired as Chief of Army Staff in March 2010, had applied for membership of the society in 2005 and was allotted a flat. He surrendered the flat in October 2010 after the scam came to light.

The statements of the duo are in stark contrast to the Ministry of Defence's stand that Adarsh building, overlooking military installations in Colaba, South Mumbai, is a security threat.
