Tehrik-e-Taliban claims responsibility for attack on Pak Army HQ

In an daring attack, heavily- armed Taliban terrorists dressed in military uniforms today targeted Pakistan army's headquarters in Rawalpindi , triggering a fierce gun battle that killed four attackers and six army men, including a Brigadier and a Lt.Colonel. Two terrorists, who managed to escape, were holding some security personnel hostage in a building near the headquarters and operations are underway to flush them out.<br/><br/>The six terrorists armed with assault rifles and grenades came in a white van and opened fire when they were challenged by the army men at a check post near a cricket stadium outside the fortified General Headquarters of army. Witnesses and officials said, after an intense exchange of fire, the terrorists left the van and ran towards another check point, firing indiscriminately at security personnel for almost 45 minutes. Witnesses said, the attackers lobbed several grenades at the soldiers.<br/><br/>Chief military spokesman Major Gen Athar Abbas initially told reporters that soldiers had foiled the attempt by terrorists to enter the General Headquarters and that the situation was fully under control after the killing of four attackers. However, gunfire erupted again shortly after Abbas spoke to the media. <br/><br/>He then confirmed that two attackers had eluded the security personnel and were holed up in the nearby building. He said, troops surrounded the building and are trying to flush them out. <br/>
