Tehran has accused the United States of being complicit in the disappearance of an Iranian nuclear scientist in Saudi Arabia. Shahram Amiri disappeared during a pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia in late May. Iranian media says, he conducts research into the medical uses of nuclear technology.

Some reports had suggested the employee of Iran's Atomic Energy Organisation had wanted to seek asylum abroad. Mr. Amiri's disappearance came long before the revelation of a second uranium enrichment facility at Qom, raising speculation that he may have given the West information about Iran's nuclear program.

Iran's foreign minister Manouchehr Mottaki says, Mr. Amiri has been arrested and that Iran has documents showing US involvement. Iran has asked Saudi Arabia for information on his whereabouts but has had no reply. The US is yet to comment.
