Teesta gets anticipatory bail for 2 weeks

In a major relief to social activist Teesta Setalvad and her husband, the Bombay High Court today extended their anticipatory bail for 2 weeks in a case related to embezzlement of funds. The court however, directed Teesta and her husband to appear before the office of Economic Offences Wing of CBI on 27th and 30th July and on 3rd and 6th August for recording their statement from 12pm to 3pm. <br/><br/>The Bombay High Court breather came a few hours after the special CBI court in Mumbai rejected the couple's anticipatory bail plea. Adjourning the case till 10th of August, Justice Mridula Bhatkar said interim protection can be granted as there is no chance that the couple would abscond. <br/><br/>While Teesta and her husband maintained that they were innocent and being falsely implicated; Public Prosecutor Sandeep Shinde argued that the offence was serious in nature and custodial interrogation was necessary. <br/><br/>Rejecting CBI's demand for daily interrogation; the court directed Teesta and her husband to appear before the CBI's Economic Offences Wing on certain fixed dates to record their statements. <br/><br/>Earlier this month, CBI had registered a case against Teesta and her husband Javed Anand alleging that her NGO Sabrang had violated the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act by receiving around Rs 1.8 crore in foreign donations from US based Ford Foundation without the mandatory government permission. The agency subsequently raided her house and offices premises in Mumbai prompting Teesta to move court in order to avoid immediate arrest.

In a major relief to social activist Teesta Setalvad and her husband, the Bombay High Court today extended their anticipatory bail for 2 weeks. This was hours after the special CBI court in Mumbai rejected the couple's bail plea in a case related to embezzlement of funds by her firm Sabrang Communication and Publishing Private Limited-SCPPL. <br/><br/>Earlier this month, CBI had registered a case against Teesta and her husband Javed Anand alleging that Sabrang had violated the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act by receiving around 2.9 lakh USD or Rs 1.8 crore in foreign donations from the United States-based Ford Foundation without government permission. According to CBI, Teesta's firm is not registered under Foreign Contribution Regulation Act for collecting money from abroad. Meanwhile, Teesta and her husband told the court that they were innocent and were being falsely implicated.
