Former Haryana Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala and his son Ajay Chautala were today sentenced to 10 years in jail for their involvement in the teachers' recruitment scam.
The sentencing came after a delay of a few hours as violent protests broke out outside the Rohini court premises in Delhi. The protesting Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) workers alleged political conspiracy against the Chautala family and clashed with the policemen. The police had to lathicharge and fire teargas shells to disperse the crowd.
Meanwhile, the other three main accused in the case, Sanjiv Kumar, Vidya Dhar and Sher Singh Badshami were also awarded 10 years in jail in the case.
After the pronuncement of the verdict, thousands of supporters of INLD further clashed with police which used batons and teargas to control them outside Rohini court in Delhi.
On January 16th, the court had held 78-year-old Om Prakash Chautala, his son Ajay Chautala and 53 others guilty of illegally recruiting 3,206 JBT teachers in the state in 2000. They have all been held guilty of cheating, forgery, using fake documents as genuine, conspiracy under the IPC and for abusing their official position under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
