In Assam, the tea production went up by seven percent upto August this year in comparison to year-ago period. Official sources said that the state has recorded an increase of tea production to around 85 million kg in August, compared to 78.63 million kg in the year-ago period.With the increased of tea production in Assam particularly, exports of tea in the country also registered an increase of 15 percent to 19.42 million kg during the month. Assam produces over 51 per cent of the total tea and 13 percent to the global tea production. The annual turnover of this industry in Assam is five thousand crore Rupees and it employs over 10 lakh workers. The state has also 64 thousand small tea estates spread over 14 districts. The state government is also considering to declare tea as the state drink of Assam.
