The actual direct and indirect tax collection has reached to 7 lakh 92 thousand crore rupees during the fiscal year 2010-11 exceeding even the revised estimate, on the back of strong economic growth. The collection is 12 thousand crore rupees more than the revised estimates of 7 lakh 80 thousand crore rupees during the last fiscal. According to the Finance Ministry, earlier the total Budget estimate for direct and indirect tax collections was Rs 7 lakh 45 thousand crore rupees. Of the total, the direct tax collection stood at 4.50 lakh crore while the indirect tax collection was 3.42 lakh crore rupees. The official said higher tax collection will help the government to fund development projects, besides reducing the fiscal deficit.
