The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) today slammed the Sri Lankan government for not allowing the war displaced civilians to settle in their places of original habitation and militarizing vast chunks of land in the Northern Province. At a news conference here TNA MP Suresh Prem Chandran claimed that atleast 3000 families in Kilinochchi and Mullaithivu areas have been forced to stay either in the transit camps or are living under the trees raising serious questions on the intentions of the Government in addressing issues related to re-settlement and reconciliation. The MP accused the Sri Lankan Army and Navy of occupying acres of land belonging to the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and denying them the rightful occupation though the President himself had assured not only to the returnees but also the Government of India. He quoted the Mullaithivu Government agent (GA) as saying that the administration has got instructions from the Defence Ministry not to settle the returnees in certain areas as the original houses and property will be used to house soldiers and their families. The parliamentarian urged the government to have a more ‘humanitarian’ approach towards resettlement without which reconciliation would be meaningless.Mr Prem Chandran also said that that nearly 2000 acres of paddy land is under the army in the Mullaivaikkal area, where the last battle between the forces and the Tigers was fought . According to him, some of the original residents who have been denied permission to settle in their original places are planning to launch an agitation on the issue. The TNA also accused the government of militarizing the former war affected areas by planning permanent deployment of nearly one lakh security forces in these areas. Suresh Premchandran said that attempts are being made to make these a family station for these soldiers which will further drain the limited resources in the region.Questioning such a massive deployment of the armed forces in the area , Suresh Premchandran said that even in KP’s assessment armed struggle in the foreseeable future is not possible.KP who succeeded Prabhakaran as the LTTE Chief is currently in the custody of the Sri Lankan government and has announced formation of an NGO to enlist support of the Diaspora in the Government efforts for relief and rehabilitation of the war displaced civilians. The issue of Jaffna High Security Zone (HSZ) was also raised , which continues to be a sensitive issue for the residents of the area.AIR correspondent Kanchan Prasad reports from Colombo that TNA MP Suresh Premchandran today questioned the motives of the Rajapaksa regime on the very important issue of ethnic reconciliation when he said that the war displaced Tamil families are being denied the right to resettle in their original places of resettlement.According to him at least 3000 families in Kilinochchi and Mullaithivu areas have been forced to stay either in the transit camps or are living under the trees.Quoting the Mullaithivu Government agent (GA) the MP said that the administration has been instructed by the Defence Ministry not to settle the returnees in certain areas as the original houses and property will be used to house soldiers and their families.
