Tamil Nadu is at the top in cases related to women and children trafficking for commercial exploitation, shows data. A total of 2602 such cases have been reported in three years, from 2007 to 2009. Punjab stands at number 10 with a total of 147 cases from the year 2007 to 2009, amongst 28 states in India. As per the data, the number is on the rise in Punjab. Neighbouring state Haryana is more notorious with a toal of 255 cases in three years and is standing at number six in the state-wise data released by National Crime Records Bureau. Chandigarh is at number three amongst the Union Territories with 16 such cases. The Centre is taking measures to combat trafficking for commercial sexual exploitation in the country. The Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act, 1956, prohibits trafficking in human beings, including children and lays down penalties for trafficking. The Union Ministry of Women and Child Development has implemented the ‘Ujjawala’ Scheme for prevention of trafficking and for rescue, rehabilitation and re-integration of victims of trafficking for commercial sexual exploitation. Quoting sources in Social Security Department, Punjab, AIR Jalandhar Correspondent reports that the state has just one Protective Home set up in Jalandhar which caters to rehabilitate such cases. Meanwhile, there are four Centre-sponsored short stay homes run by Red Cross at Faridkot, Amritsar, Jalandhar and Dhaliwal in Gurdaspur which look after such and other cases. About Rs. 28 lakh has also been spent on these four homes to rehabilitate cases related to human trafficking and others. Survey is on to set more such homes in every district of Punjab.
