Tamil Nadu to be hunger-free: Karunanidhi

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi says, concerted steps are being taken to make the state hunger free. Inaugurating an international conference on Eliminating hunger and poverty in Chennai today, he said though steady progress has been made to achieve the objective much more needs to be done.Stating that Tamil Nadu was a rain shadow state, the chief minister said the government is trying to revive the practice of community care and managements of tanks. He said the government is to launch a mission for tank fed agriculture in Ramanathapuram district.Referring to the effects of Global warming, Karunanidhi said the Tamil Nadu government is preparing a suitable agricultural strategy based on the application of biotechnology and information technology.Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Dr K. Rosiah in his address urged the centre to take up implementation of large irrigation projects, in the same way as in the case of power, to meet the growing irrigation requirements of farmers.Calling for a multi pronged strategy to boost agriculture productivity, Dr Rosiah said universities and research institutions have to take the initiative for development of varieties suitable for dry land agriculture.
