The Tamilnadu Chief Minister J.Jayalalithaa said that the State would not propogate the idea of growing BT Cotton hereafter. In a suo moto statement in the Assembly on Friday, the Chief Minister said that the Government has decided on the issue based on the opinions put forth by various parties and farmers. Tamilnadu had adopted to growing BT cotton variety since 2002. In another suo moto statement in the Assembly on Friday, the Chief Minister said that 100 high schools in the State would be upgraded to higher secondary schools. She also said that this would provide employment to 900 Post graduate teachers. Jayalalithaa also told that apart from the science stream arts subjects would also be introduced in these schools. She also said the Government would incur an additional expenditure of 44 crores and 91 lakh rupees every year to implement the scheme. Intervening in the debate on the revised budget on Friday, Jayalalithaa criticised the Centre for not providing the required amount of financial assistance and the routine allocation of Kerosene through PDS. She said that the State Government had to depend only on the VAT and the commercial tax revenue for implementing the welfare schemes formulated by the State Government.
