Tamil Nadu govt should work with organisations interested in conservation of water bodies, says Madras HC

The Madras High Court has said that Tamil Nadu government should work with organisations interested in conservation of water bodies. In wake of the severe water crisis in the state, it also asked the state government not to prevent protests highlighting the issue.
''
'' Justice N Anand Venkatesh observed yesterday while directing Chennai Commissioner of Police to permit an NGO to hold a demonstration highlighting the present water crisis in the city and the causes for it.
''
'' The court stated that awareness must be spread as the issue is a burning one, and that the NGO was a pioneer in it. It added that the government is taking all its efforts to ensure water is supplied to the entire city. The judge said, it is important to know that various water bodies were encroached upon which destroyed the ecosystem.
''
'' On June 20th, the Commissioner had rejected the NGO's application seeking permission for the protest. It reasoned that another organisation had sought permission on the same day and this may cause a law and order problem.
''
''Several parts of Tamil Nadu have been reeling under severe water shortage since last month owing to poor storage in various reservoirs following deficit rainfall.
