Tamil Nadu Govt moves SC against discussion on Mekedatu dam project in forthcoming Cauvery Water Management Authority meeting

The Tamil Nadu Government has moved the Supreme Court against any discussion on the contentious Mekedatu dam project in the forthcoming Cauvery Water Management Authority meeting.<br />''<br />''Tamil Nadu and Karnataka are having a longstanding dispute over the sharing of Cauvery waters. The Cauvery tribunal and the Supreme Court have adjudicated on the issue.<br />''<br />''Tamil Nadu says that the upper riparian state cannot construct any structures across the River Cauvery without the concurrence of the lower riparian states as per the awards of the tribunal and the apex court.<br />''<br />''However, the Karnataka Government prepared a Detailed Project Report on the new dam, leading to a fresh row between the two neighbouring states.<br />''<br />''In the agenda of the forthcoming sitting of the Cauvery Water Management Authority, the project is said to have been included. The Tamil Nadu Irrigation Minister Duraimurugan said any discussion on it will be opposed by the state representative in the meeting, adding that such a discussion has been stalled in the previous meetings also.<br />''<br />''Meanwhile, the minister said in a statement that the state government has moved the apex court seeking to prevent any discussion on the new dam.<br />
