Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Ms J.Jayalalithaa today told the state Assembly that she has got no powers to intervene in the rejection of the mercy petition of the three convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi murder case. In a suo moto statement at the State Assembly today, My.Jayalalithaa appealed to the political party leaders in the state to refrain from saying that the Chief Minister has powers to commute the death sentence or intervene in the rejection of the mercy plea. The Chief Minister also referred to the case of self immolation by a young girl demanding the Chief Minister to intervene in commuting the death penalty. The DMK, PMK, Puthiya Tamilagam, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi have been demanding the commutation of the death penalty. A case has been filed against the death penalty in the High Court which is to come up for hearing tomorrow.
