The bypoll to RK Nagar Assembly constituency in Chennai will be held today. The bypoll in RK Nagar was necessitated by the death of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, who represented the constituency twice, before her death on December 5 last year.

Though there are 59 candidates in the fray, the main contest is likely between AIADMK heavyweight and former Minister E Madhusudhanan, N Maruthu Ganesh of DMK, VK Sasikala's nephew TTV Dhinakaran, who is contesting as an Independent, and K Nagaraj of BJP.

A day ahead of the bypoll, Election Commission yesterday banned the telecast of a video, released by an MLA of the AIADMK's TTV Dinakaran faction, purportedly showing late chief minister J Jayalalithaa in a hospital in Chennai.

Bypoll for two assembly constituencies – Pakke Kasang and Likabali in Arunachal Pradesh, Sikandra in Uttar Pradesh and Sabang in West Bengal is also taking place today.
