Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker resigns

In a sudden move, Tamilnadu Legislative Assembly speaker D Jayakumar resigned from his post today. The notification issued by Assembly Secretary AMP Jamaludeen confirmed the resignation and said that Deputy Speaker P Dhanapal would perform the duties of the Speaker. Jayakumar is an advocate by profession and a senior member of the AIADMK. He was elected four times from the Royapuram constituency in North Chennai and has also served as a minister from 1991 to 1996 during the AIADMK regime as Minister for fisheries.
