The Tamil Nadu Assembly has passed a bill to provide for nominating the Vice Chancellors of the state-run universities by the government instead of the Governor. While introducing the bill, the Minister of Higher Education Ponmudi said, in states like Gujarat, the Vice Chancellors are being appointed by the State Government and in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, they are being appointed by the Governor on the recommendation of the State Governments.<br />''<br />''Chief Minister M. K. Stalin, in his intervention during the debate, referred to the Punchhi Commission report on the Centre-State relations saying that it has recommended to do away with the appointment of Vice Chancellors by the Governors. The BJP opposed the bill at the introductory stage itself, saying it will lead to political interference in the University affairs. Later, the party MLAs staged a walkout.
