Talks on climate change moving too slowly: Ban Ki-moon

UN Secretary-General Mr Ban Ki-moon has said talks on climate change were moving too slowly. Addressing the Climate Change conference at the United Nations , Ban said all the countries can contribute to the greater good of curbing the menace instead of demanding concessions from others. He called for ambitious emission reduction targets from industrialised countries by 2020 and action by developing countries to limit the growth of their emissions while they grow substantially.US has said it understands the gravity of the climate threat and is determined to act to meet its responsibility to future generations. Addressing the summit, US President Barack Obama said that climate was the biggest issue in its ties with countries like India and China. India has said it is ready to play an active role in crafting a new global accord on combating climate change. Environment minister Jairam Ramesh said it is wrong to blame India for the deadlock on the global climate change talks and that it is prepared to be an active player in working towards an agreement.Earlier, in his address to the General Assembly, Chinese President Hu Jintao pointed out that China was implementing its National Climate Change Programme. He said the programme includes mandatory targets for reducing energy intensity and discharge of major pollutants, and increasing forest coverage and share of renewable energy for the period of 2005 through 2010.
