Talks on between striking doctors and Govt. representative

Second round of talks between the striking doctors and the government representatives is on to end the strike at Safdarjang hospital. The Medical Superintendent of the hospital and a Joint Secretary in Ministry of Health is holding talks with the representatives of the striking doctors to end the deadlock over their demand of adequate security inside the hospital premises. The doctors had called for a strike at the hospital on Tuesday after one of their colleagues was allegedly beaten up by relatives of a patient. The Minister of State for Health Mr Dinesh Trivedi who visited the hospital on Tuesday has said that if the doctors do not end their strike soon, the administration is free to take action against the them. AIR correspondent who visited the hospital says patient care has been hit for the second day today as the strike by nearly 1200 resident doctors continues.Though the striking doctors have opened a parallel Out Patient Department (OPD) near the emergency wing of the hospital to cater to patients, many people from several states like Bihar, Assam, Madhya Pradesh and neighbouring areas, who required emergency services were left to fend for themselves.Earlier, speaking to AIR, Dr Pratap, General Secretary of the hospital's Residents' Doctors Association, said more security is needed for doctors, who are manhandled by patients' relatives frequently. He said there should be a fool proof security arrangement in the hospital premises. Minister of State for Health Mr Dinesh Trivedi had earlier assured the resident doctors about ensuring security in the hospital.
