An emergency meeting of rail authorities and motormen union is in progress in Mumbai. The meeting has been called by Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan in wake of ongoing strikes of motormen in Mumbai which has affected thousands of commuters.<br/><br/>Meanwhile, despite dismissal of 20 motormen, the local train services remained paralysed for the second day today. Over seven million commuters, including office-goers and students, were severely hit this morning due to the ongoing agitation by motormen manning Mumbai's crucial suburban trains. Around 800 motormen began an indefinite hunger strike yesterday demanding hike in pay scales and allowances.<br/><br/>While hundreds of commuters managed to reach their homes late last evening, the situation was worse today morning with the railways announcing the cancellation of nearly 80 percent of the total 2,000 daily services.<br/><br/>Railways have issued a rare advisory this morning requesting commuters to travel by local trains only if necessary. It has also asked passengers to travel in long distance trains which will halt at all stations.<br/><br/>The state government has also deployed Mumbai Police and SRPF additional forces at all railway stations to tackle any problem. It has also started passenger helpline number to assist the commuters. <br/><br/>The state government is also contemplating imposing Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA). The BEST and MSRTC have also deployed additional bus services to help stranded commuters in the city and elsewhere.<br/><br/>Mumbai University announced that any student who was delayed for the 40-odd final examinations need not panic, they would be permitted extra time to write their papers. Under the Shops and Establishments Act, Maharashtra Government will also allow employees to report an hour late for work and leave early owing to the motormen strike.<br/><br/>The western and eastern express highway also continued to be jammed with commuters opting for road transport to reach their destinations. Reports of traffic jam also came in from other places in the city like Bandra, Link raod, Dadar, Borivali, SV Road .
