Taliban terrorists target Pakistan Army Hqrs. in Rawalpindi six army men killed

In a daring attack, heavily- armed Taliban terrorists dressed in military uniforms targeted Pakistan army's headquarters in Rawalpindi on Saturday , triggering a fierce gun battle that killed four attackers and six army men, including a Brigadier and a Lt.Colonel. Two terrorists, who managed to escape, were holding some security personnel hostage in a building near the headquarters and operations are underway to flush them out.<br/><br/>The six terrorists armed with assault rifles and grenades came in a white van and opened fire when they were challenged by the army men at a check post near a cricket stadium outside the fortified General Headquarters of army. Witnesses and officials said, after an intense exchange of fire, the terrorists left the van and ran towards another check point, firing indiscriminately at security personnel for almost 45 minutes. Witnesses said, the attackers lobbed several grenades at the soldiers.<br/><br/>Chief military spokesman Major Gen Athar Abbas initially told reporters that soldiers had foiled the attempt by terrorists to enter the General Headquarters and that the situation was fully under control after the killing of four attackers. However, gunfire erupted again shortly after Abbas spoke to the media.<br/><br/>He then confirmed that two attackers had eluded the security personnel and were holed up in the nearby building. He said, troops surrounded the building and are trying to flush them out.<br/><br/>Meanwhile latest reports suggest that Taliban terrorists were holding 10-15 hostages, including security personnel, hours after launching an audacious attack on Pakistan Army's headquarters in nearby Rawalpindi. The Army initially claimed that the situation was under control. But in the night Chief military spokesman Maj Gen Athar Abbas said four to five terrorists were holding about 10 to 15 security personnel and civilian employees hostage in the building. The terrorists are armed and had explosives. There were reports that officials had established contacts with the terrorists to ensure a peaceful resolution of the hostage crisis. The terrorists were asked to surrender unconditionally.<br/><br/>President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani have condemned the attack. Zardari said such attacks will not deter the government's resolve to fight terrorism and extremism. This is not going to weaken our resolve, rather it will strengthen it, he said in his address at an official function. <br/><br/>Meanwhile a latest report says Eight of the hostages held by Taliban militants, who stormed the Pakistan Army headquarters in Rawalpindi on Saturday , have been freed. Dawn news channel reported this quoting military official in Islamabad. Taliban terrorists, who earlier in the day launched an audacious attack on the Pakistan Army's General Headquarters, were holding 10-15 hostages. Dawn news quoted military officials as saying that they will not hold any negotiations with the militants. They also said they had not received any demands from the militants.
