In Afghanistan, fighting between Taliban militants and security forces in southern Kandahar city continued for the second day today as 27 people including 23 militants have been killed so far. Interior Ministry spokesman Zamarai Bashari said Afghan security forces had killed 23 suicide attackers and detained four others while two civilians and two security personnel were among those killed. Around 50 people including 26 security personnel were also injured. He said fighting broke out today when security forces began an operation to clear the city's Kandahar Hotel, located next to the intelligence agency headquarters and a police station. He said, it was not known how many militants were holed up in the hotel and troops were cautious as most of the militants were believed to be wearing suicide vests. NATO troops and helicopters are seen supporting Afghan forces in the fighting. The militant group attacked at least 10 government installations including governor’s office yesterday and was engaged in gun fight for several hours. The city's streets are virtually empty and roads have been blocked. President Hamid Karzai condemned the attacks saying militants were seeking revenge for the killing of Osama bin Laden.
