Taliban rejects media reports of Mullah Omar’s death

In Afghanistan, Taliban has denied that its leader Mullah Mohmmad Omar has been found and killed in Pakistan as reported in local media. A local TV channel quoting intelligence sources on condition of anonymity reported that Mullah Omar was shot dead as he was being moved from Quetta to North Waziristan by former ISI chief Gen. Hamid Gul two days ago. There has been no official confirmation to the news and an Afghan Taliban spokesman termed it a mere propaganda. News agencies quoting Pakistan intelligence officials also denied the reports. Omar is considered the spiritual leader of the Taliban movement that operates in parts of Afghanistan. He was Afghanistan's de facto head of state from 1996 to late 2001 and has the title “Head of the Supreme Council”. Omar is long suspected to be operating from Pakistani city of Quetta since Taliban was removed from power in 2001.
