In Pakistan, at least five security personnel were killed when heavily-armed Taliban gunmen stormed a major naval airbase in the port city of Karachi, destroying two US-made surveillance aircrafts. Unconfirmed reports however said, eleven people are reported to have been killed and several have been taken hostage. Around 15-20 gunmen struck PNS Mehran, the naval air station within Faisal airbase, at about 10.40 pm last night, lobbying grenades and firing indiscriminately with automatic weapons triggering gun battles with security forces. Fifteen loud explosions were heard from the base, following the attack and intermittent firing was reported till this morning. The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan, which has stepped up attacks on security installations since the death of bin Laden, has claimed responsibility for the assault. State-run PTV said there were unconfirmed reports that four to five terrorists had been killed or captured. Hundreds of security personnel, including from the paramilitary Pakistan Rangers and elite naval and army commandos, have moved into the airbase to flush out the terrorists. Media reports from the Navy base in Karachi say that three militants blew themselves up, while the security forces have arrested four other militants.
