Taliban attack kills 12 including 6 UN staff in Afghanistan

In Afghanistan, twelve people including six foreign UN workers were killed today in a Taliban attack on UN guesthouse in capital Kabul while two rockets were fired in the city, one of them landing inside compound of a five-star hotel. A UN spokesman said the attack in central Kabul killed six UN international staff members while at least nine others were injured. Two Afghan security officers and three attackers were also killed in explosions caused by the militants' suicides vests and the subsequent firefight which lasted for around two hours. Abdul Ghafar Sayedzada, head of the criminal investigation department of the Kabul police said a civilian watching the battle from the second floor of his house died when a bullet struck him in the head. He said two rockets were also fired into Kabul, one of them hit the main building of the Kabul's only five-star Serena Hotel, which is located near the presidential palace. The other struck a park near the hotel but caused no casualties. President Hamid Karzai has termed the attacks as inhuman while ordering to enhance security around foreign installations.<br/>A Taliban spokesman claimed responsibility for the attacks, saying it was meant as an assault on the upcoming presidential election. There are threats of more such attacks in run up to second round of Presidential elections scheduled for November 7. Taliban has announced for boycott of the polls and threatened to attack persons and institutions involved in the elections. Violence is on the rise and eight US soldiers were killed yesterday in IED explosions in southern province of Kandahar. The current month has proved to be deadliest since 2001 with deaths of 55 soldiers so far
