Supreme Court-mandated Environment Pollution (Prevention and Control) Authority, EPCA today asked Delhi government to take urgent steps to augment public transport and improve its functioning to make odd even effective. <br/><br/>The pollution watchdog also said, the city government has done little to augment the public transport system in the city. <br/><br/>In a letter to Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot, EPCA chairperson Bhure Lal said, Delhi government has adequate land to park up to two thousand buses but Arvind Kejriwal government did not procure any buses. <br/><br/>He clarified that the pollution watchdog had not directed odd-even car rationing scheme even in this severe plus smog condition in Delhi. Mr Lal said, even before EPCA could assess the situation and communicate its decision, the city government decided implementation of the odd-even scheme. <br/><br/>The anti-pollution committee felt that there was no need to direct the Delhi government to implement odd-even scheme in view of enforcement challenge of the already directed measures and the fact that weather conditions were to improve. <br/><br/>Mr Lal also pointed out that the odd-even scheme included in the graded response action plan is designed as an emergency measure, there are no exemptions and duration is also limited to the period until the air quality improved. He also reminded that lack of public transport will make such an important pollution control intervention meaningless.<br/><br/>Meanwhile, Mr Gahlot said that the transport department has finalised procurement of two thousand non-AC CNG buses. He said, the process is to be completed within 10 months with the target to roll out these buses within a year.
