Legal luminary and former member of Law Commission Dr Tahir Mehmood today defended the Centre against criticisms by the Muslim bodies over its affidavit to the Supreme Court on Triple Talaq. <br/><br/>He said, any government had to respond to the court under the provisions of the Constitution in the situation. <br/> <br/>Dr. Mehmood also said the Muslim Personal Law Board had no constitutional status, and it had been playing a very regressive role by distorting the true Qur'anic law. <br/><br/>Speaking at a lecture organised by a rights body Jamia Collective in New Delhi, he said there was no provision of Triple Talaq in one go in the Qur'an, so it was unfortunate that Muslim bodies had been indulging in an un-Islamic act by supporting the practice.<br/><br/>The former Law Commission member said the practice of Triple Talaq had already been declared unlawful by the Supreme Court in the Shameem Ara case, so there was no need of challenging it. <br/><br/>The Supreme Court had recently asked the central government's stand on a petition filed by a woman Shayara Bano against her husband who had divorced her by pronouncing the word thrice in one go.<br/><br/>She had also contested the practice of polygamy and halala (the condition of the women consummating marriage with another person before being remarried with person who divorced her.
