A new study shows the standard way of tagging Penguins for scientific research by putting bands around their flippers, affects their survival and reproduction. French researchers, who studied king Penguins over ten years, say the bands slow down the birds as they swim. They say continuing to use the tags will in most situations be unethical. Flipper bands have been used for decades to identify individual penguins so they can be tracked on land and sea.
